Foods to Beat the End of Term Blues

There reaches a certain point in term when there is a student slump. Easter is drawing closer, as are the essay deadlines. The temptation to devour an Easter egg two weeks early is high, as is the temptation to put off finishing those final 500 words until five minutes before the deadline. What is needed is one final push, found in the form of some energy boosting yet tasty snacks! With these snacks in tow, the final 500 words will fly by.

When determination and focus are needed, it is vital to keep energy levels high. Fruit and nuts are great sources of energy and can be snacked on throughout the day. If you’re in a hurry, pack a banana and a tub of mixed nuts: almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and pecans make a great combination. If you find yourself with a little more time in the morning, make yourself a filing breakfast. A few spoons of natural yoghurt, a chopped banana, some berries, a drizzle of honey, and a sprinkle of granola or crushed nuts will provide you with lots of protein and vitamin C to get your day off to a great, energy-boosting start.

Eating foods rich in omega-3 is scientifically proven to help you perform better at tasks that involve a lot of thinking. Fish is rich in omega-3 and is great brain-fuel. Whether you’re a fan of salmon or more of a prawn person, there are numerous options for you. Salmon with brown rice and broccoli is a nutritious dinner that can help keep you awake through those nighttime revision sessions. If you fancy a quick lunch then mackerel pâté with crackers and chopped carrots and cucumber can provide you with a quick yet energy-enhancing meal.

There is no denying that when you’ve spent hours staring at words on a computer screen you’ll have sugar cravings. If this is the case, pick up a granola bar or some chocolate-covered rice cakes. A granola bar is packed with nuts, oats and fruit so will keep you full for a long time whilst beating your sugar craving. If it’s chocolate your body wants then chocolate-covered rice cakes are a perfect option. Whether you are a milk or dark chocolate fan, rice cakes are a healthy option that can be snacked on throughout the day for a sugar release over a longer period of time.

It is not easy to keep motivated towards the end of term, but with the right fuel inside you, it can help sustain you for those last few days.
