American Ultra: A Review
There are many reasons as to why I was very much excited about ‘American Ultra’ movie release, one of them however is the reunion of the ‘adorkable’ duo: Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.
Having previously teamed up in ‘Adventureland’ (2009), the much anticipated action comedy ‘American Ultra’ which is directed by Nima Nourizadeh sees stoner Mike Howell (Eisenberg) discover that he is a highly trained sleeper agent. His past then suddenly comes back to haunt him and he uncovers the true identity of his fellow stoner girlfriend Phoebe Larson (Stewart). All hell breaks loose and a lethal government operation leads to Mike summoning his inner action-hero in order to survive.
Overall this film was thoroughly enjoyable and exactly what you would have possibly expected when hearing about these two Hollywood actors working together. The chemistry of these two is undeniable and together it beings something refreshing to the screen every time you see them. However, this is the type of film that you would need to see more than once in order to gain an understanding of what is happening. It was a little confusing at times and you definitely need a lot of concentration to get a true gist of the plot.
At times I was reminded of ‘Inception’ and how I would be lost if I had needed to go to the toilet halfway through, though with ‘American Ultra’ you are most probably too hooked with all the action that is going on to realise that your bladder is screaming for your attention. There is a generous sprinkle of funny scenes helped by actor John Leguizamo (Rose), playing Mike’s drug dealing friend.
If you love a good laugh-out-loud comedy this is definitely recommended, and even more so accompanied by a group of friends. You will be left amazed by how entertainingly fast-paced it is and perhaps a tummy ache from laughing so much.
